How to Make the Most of Summer

July 31st, 2013

Making the transition from summer to autumn can creep up on you, especially here in my part of the country. Before you know it, summer will be over and you’ll be wondering where the time has gone. Whether your goal is to spend more time with friends or to just get your kids out more to enjoy the sunshine, you can make the most of what’s left of summer with some planning and easy DIY home spruce-ups. The key is to set up your home and lay out a routine.

Spruce Up Your Home for Success

It’s easy to maintain a clean and well-decorated home to entertain guests any time. By keeping simple and convenient decorating practices, you don’t have to worry about not having an inviting home.

Quick and Easy Change-ups

Establish a routine spruce-up for your home ― especially for the areas where you entertain guests. A routine spruce-up means you don’t have to spend a lot of time prepping the house and making it look nice. These quick and easy dress-ups can be done within minutes every day (or week), enabling you to spend less time on fixing your décor and more time having fun with your guests.

  • Switch out pillow covers and throws – As I’ve mentioned before, switching out pillow covers and throws changes the room’s look dramatically. This practice only takes about 15 minutes of your time and can be done once a week. By changing out your pillow covers and throws in your living room, you’ll have a lovely place to bring your guests without doing major decorating. If you want to busy your hands with a DIY activity, you can check out Martha Stewart’s painted outdoor pillow project.
  • Change out your curtains – Putting up fresh curtains instantly revitalizes a room. It also brings a cozy atmosphere to your home that welcomes guests.
  • Put fresh flowers – A vase of fresh flowers creates a focal point to your décor and refreshes the room. Summer flowers such as daisies, marigolds, or purple coneflowers bring a lively vibe and add color to your space.

Quick and Easy Organizational Tips

There are also ways to keep your house organized every day, thereby reducing the time you spend cleaning and putting stuff away. These tips will make it easy for you to entertain your guests and gather up the kids for a day of swimming, hiking, and other adventures.

  • Store items where you use them – Place your wallets, keys, and phones in a bowl near the front door or the door to the garage. The idea is to not waste time searching for the necessary stuff as you herd your children to the car.
  • Put things away – Don’t let your outerwear, shoes, and other particulars remain on the floor. Put them away as soon as you enter the door, keeping your entryway ready for guests. Let the kids put away their things in order to make it into a habit.
  • Have a cubby or basket next to the front door for different activities – Make the next trip easy for you and the kids with organized cubbies and baskets. Arrange the cubbies or baskets next to the front door with supplies for various activities, like towels and slippers for swimming, fishing rods for fishing in the lake, or their go-to bags for hiking. Having organized spaces is an efficient way to keep everything ready for your kids’ next summer adventure.

Entertaining Made Easy

With your house set-up, plan routine nights for entertaining. You don’t have to throw a big party to have a fun night with friends and family, so keep things simple and laid-back.

Set up a weekly get-together with your family and friends for a simple entertaining activity. Build it into your schedule so you won’t feel like you’re just letting summer pass by. My family, for example, has a s’mores night every Thursday. We make it into a weekly activity to enjoy time with each other without the hassle of setting up a full-blown dinner party. The relaxing atmosphere of a warm summer’s night combined with the effortless summer dessert gives you the perfect set-up for easy summer fun!

We still have almost two months left before summer officially ends on September 22. That means your kids can still enjoy the warm, beautiful weather even if they’ve already gone back to school. So simplify your home routine, invite people over, freshen up your home, and, most importantly, have fun.
