In our previous posts, we talked about how you can paint your walls and move your furniture around to give your home a fresh look. This time, we’ll discuss how to choose the right accessories to complement your home.

In this month’s Home Décor 101 post, we’ll talk about:

  • How to find decorating inspiration
  • Where you can find amazing home décor accessories
  • How to achieve a new look using the same accessories

Accessorizing your home does not have to be complicated or expensive ― with the right inspiration and some experimentation, you’ll have a lovely and well-decorated home in no time!

Where to Find Inspiration

Find accessories you want in magazines

When choosing your home’s accessories, go with what you love. Create a storyboard of home décor items you like when going over magazines and decorating blogs. You can also take note of accessories that you see in TV shows or films.

If you only want to change up your décor a bit, let the different seasons inspire you. The various elements that make the season unique can be used inside the house as an accessory. For instance, you can add white pumpkins to your hutch during the fall or place on the mantel your kids’ collection of seashells in a shallow bowl during the summer.

You can also incorporate the season’s colors into your décor through your pillow covers, throws, or drapes. Pastel shades are perfect for spring. For the summer, use bright colors, and during fall and winter, decorate with warm tones that add a bit of warmth to a room.

Where to Find Your Accessories

There are plenty of places where you can find amazing home décor ideas, without going over your set budget.

Don’t forget to shop your house!

It may not seem like it, but your house is a treasure trove of home décor accessories that you can use! In my case, I use items that I already have to spruce up my mantels and bookshelves each season. I also mix and match frames, switch out candlesticks, tchotchkes, and more.

DIY if you have the time

If you have the time (like a free weekend), do a bit of DIY with some old items. Search your house for some items in your storage that you can repurpose like this spray-painted lampshade or this fabric-covered lampshade both from Emily A. Clark.

Quick tips for shopping in stores:

Color swatches are your best friend when shopping

When shopping, pick your preferred color and carry your color swatches with you. These can be fabric pieces or paint chips. Better yet, take your design storyboard for the room you are decorating. This helps you save time and money in buying pieces that will go well with the décor you want.

And since you have your storyboard ready, you can easily stick to the theme you have. This could be a beach theme, a Halloween theme, or a theme based on your favorite colors.

Don’t overthink a purchase unless it’s crazy expensive or a style or color you don’t ordinarily like. If a home décor piece is out of your comfort zone, but you like it, create a storyboard around it to check if it will complement your home design.

Arrange and Rearrange

Once you get your accessories, play with them. Switch out items and move your accessories to change up your home décor every couple of months. If applicable, you can group similar items together to create a new look for your décor. This simple tip lets you change the look of your home without having to spend anything!

Use these quick, easy, and affordable tips when adding fabulous accessories to your home.

The next Home Décor 101 post will be even more interesting than the last, so tune in again next month!
