Speed Clean Your Home in Under 1 Hour

September 11th, 2013

Taking an entire day to clean out the whole house is great but with young kids and a busy schedule, that’s not always possible.  For times when guests are coming over, and you are caught between cooking and decorating, these quick home cleaning tips can give you a presentable home in under one hour.

How do I start?

With speed cleaning, starting with the biggest obstacles is the best way to go!

Put away the largest things first

One of the most useful quick home cleaning tips is to get rid of the biggest clutter first. Get a laundry basket and pick up clothes, towels, and toys. Once everything has been picked up, put the basket someplace where the guests are unlikely to see it, like the laundry or your bedroom closet. You can get back to the items and put them away once the party is over.

Clean surfaces next

Next, touch up visible surfaces. Generally, end tables, the coffee table, and the dining table are the first on my list since those are the surfaces that get the most use. Wiping tables with a  damp rag can eliminate dust, mild scratches, and pencil marks. As for the floors, a quick vacuum of the rugs and carpets will do the trick.

Then, speed clean the rest of the rooms

one thing I do is to give myself an allotted time for each room — say 15 minutes — and then I actually use a timer so I know when to move on

Once your house is free of clutter and its surfaces are wiped down, you can now move on to the rooms.

Quick Tip: When I have people coming over and I only have an hour to tidy up the house, one thing I do is to give myself an allotted time for each room — say 15 minutes — and then I actually use a timer so I know when to move on. I did this all the time when we were trying to sell our house, and I had a 5-year-old, a 4-year-old, and 2-year-old twins. You can’t imagine how difficult it was to get things done, but I would put the timer on and bust a move!

Take on the entryway

Clean entryway

The entryway is the first thing guests see, so take the time to freshen it up. Since you’re in a hurry, don’t do any heavy lifting. Thoroughly sweep the area, straighten things up (shoes, baskets, and chairs may be getting in the way), and shake off or vacuum your rug. These few, simple steps will result in a better-looking entryway ― just in time before your guests arrive.

Tackle the bathroom next

Clean bathroom

Cleaning bathrooms is trickier, but don’t let that deter you ― you still have enough time to clean it before the guests arrive. Save time by pouring cleaning liquid into your toilet bowl and letting it sit for a while for it to take effect. While waiting, clean the mirror and sink, sweep or vacuum the floor (spot clean any noticeable dirt), straighten the toiletries, and put out a new hand towel and fresh roll of toilet paper. Finally, rinse out the toilet bowl.

Save the kitchen for last

Last, but not the least, take on the kitchen! Load all the dirty dishes into the dishwasher, and let the dirty pots and pans soak in the sink. While the dishes get cleaned and the pots soak, spray some diluted dishwashing liquid on the counter and sink, and wipe them down. Once you’ve cleaned the surfaces, clean the pots and pans to finish everything up.

You can have a presentable home in no time with these quick home cleaning tips. How about you? Do you have any ideas to share?
