5 Camping Activities Your Kids Will Love

August 8th, 2014

Camping is a fun and affordable way for families to spend time together outdoors, unplugged and away from distractions. More importantly, it’s a great way to create lifelong memories. Here are five activities to keep your family entertained while camping out this summer.

1. Campfire Cookout

Add a twist to traditional camp food to make them more exciting, like topping regular s’mores with granola, crispy rice, or nuts. For meals, make your own version of campfire calzone by filling a couple of slices of bread with mozzarella and pepperoni.

Remember to bring travel-friendly fruits and greens that you can quickly whip up for snacks, like apples or celery sticks with peanut butter. Add raisins or banana for an extra boost of energy for activities and games.

2. Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are fun, easy to organize, and a great tactile learning experience for the kids. If you want to change it up a bit, print out BINGO cards with images of campsite items that they need to look for. Do this in groups while hiking or trekking. Reward the winner with an extra campfire treat!

3. Team Olympics

Teach kids the value of teamwork by organizing a mini-Olympics. Relay, long jump, and tug of war are classic games that everyone loves. If you’re camping by a lake, a swimming competition will get the bigger kids excited.

4. Nature Arts and Crafts

Using your arts-and-crafts kit, ask the kids to add color to ordinary objects like rocks, dried leaves, and twigs. Stimulate creativity with a bit of friendly competition and have a vote-off on who wins. Make sure to have prizes and goodies prepared for the winners.

5. Nature Walkthrough

Camping is also a wonderful opportunity to create a low-key outdoor classroom. Take the kids on a nature walk. Use a guidebook and let them interact with wildlife to enrich their learning. And if there’s time, let them create a nature journal for collecting, writing, and drawing about their experiences.

There are a lot of fun and exciting things you can do with the kids this summer. Get a quick start with the help of these ideas. Happy camping!
